Yerbolat Baybatyrov, Kazakhstan sambo fighter has won a gold medal in Moscow Sambo Super Cup, Tengrinews.kz reports. 250 fighters from 25 countries took part in Kharlampiev Memorial World Sambo Super Cup. Baybatyrov, four-time world champion from Ural and 57-kilogram weight league wrestler, won four fights and the gold medal. He fought against Karimov, Tadjikistan fighter, in the final of the tournament. “I was sure that I would win, however, the fights were tough ones. It was very important for me to win the Super Cup. I have participated in the tournament for the fourth time. I lost once and came second twice. And now I am celebrating this long-awaited victory,” Baybatyrov said. Another Kazakhstan fighter Assylbek Alkeya, 74-kilogram weight league wrestler, won bronze. Kharlampiev Memorial World Sambo Super Cup was held for the 33rd time this year. This Cup is one of the most prestigious and its gold medals are equal to World Championship victory. Only the best sambo fighters participate in it. Sambo is a Russian martial art and combat sport. The word "sambo" is an acronym which literally translates as "self-defense without weapons". Sambo is relatively modern since its development began in the early 1920s by the Soviet Red Army to improve their hand to hand combat abilities. Intended to be a merger of the most effective techniques of other martial arts, Sambo has roots in Japanese judo plus traditional folk styles of wrestling. Anatoly Kharlampiev is often officially considered the founder of Sport Sambo. In 1938, it was recognized as an official sport by the USSR All-Union Sports Committee. In late 1950s Japanese judoka awarded Kharlampiyev with an honorary eighth dan rank. It was impossible to get this rank for a non-Japanese fighter that time. A movie called Unbeatable was made about this prominent sambo fighter.
